Environmental Impact Assessments for Power Plants in India

The Citizen Consumer and Civic Action Group (CAG) based in Chennai, is reviewing the principle law governing environment clearance in India. Issued in 1994, this law establishes Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) as a mechanism to investigate and evaluate the potential impacts of a proposed development project or activity. It is also the most significant effort made by the Government of India towards the inclusion of public participation and enhancing good governance in environmental decision making.

In upcoming months, CAG will review several other laws including the Environment Protection Act (1986), the Water Act (1974), the Air Act (1981), and the Public Liability Insurance Act (1991). Analysis of these laws will clarify environmental clearance procedures applicable to the setting up and operation of power plants. Based on the findings, CAG will provide recommendations on how to improve electricity governance in India.
