National Policy on the Voluntary Sector Recognizes the Role of Civil Society in India

On May 17th the India’s Union Cabinet approved the National Policy on the Voluntary Sector. The goal of the policy is "to provide an enabling environment for the voluntary sector and also make it accountable, so that voluntary organizations can play their constructive role in development activities effectively.” The policy will streamline the varied, and sometimes strict, state rules for registration as a voluntary organization. The policy will also ease the flow of funding to VOs with domestic donation incentives and a review of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA). Third, the new policy calls for formal mechanisms of cooperation and coordination between the government and VOs. It also emphasizes making all VOs more transparent and accountable.
