The Electricity Governance Initiative will host a side event at the 13th Meeting of the Parties of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Bali, Indonesia, on December 7 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM (location TBA).
GENERATING DIALOGUE: Electricity Demand and Climate Change
Policymakers, regulators, citizens, and the international community are grappling with the challenges of providing access to reliable and affordable electricity, and addressing major environmental challenges including climate change. Expanding access to electricity and improving the quality and reliability of electricity supply is an urgent socio-economic priority in South and East Asia. But continued dependence on polluting fossil fuels for electricity generation and inefficiencies in Asia’s electricity industry, will account for a major share of predicted growth in global greenhouse gas emissions, and have significant local environmental and social impacts.
The purpose of this meeting is to bring a small and focused group of government, civil society, and private sector actors together to consider the common challenges that countries in South and South East Asia are facing in reconciling rapidly growing demand for energy, climate change, and sustainable development. It will build on a discussion of the implications of Indonesia’s ongoing program to add 10,000 MW of additional power generation capacity, India’s ongoing Ultra Mega Power Program to build seven new 4,000 MW supercritical coal plants over the next year, and Thailand’s 2007 Power Development Plan.
