Remembering Girish Sant

picture

Girish Sant, co-founder of Prayas (Pune), passed away on February 2 in New Delhi, after a cardiac arrest. Girish was a pioneering analyst and advocate of pro-people, scientific policies in the power sector, and coordinated Prayas Energy Group as it became a key centre worldwide in energy governance. He was 46.

The Electricity Governance Initiative began as a partnership between WRI and Prayas Energy Group. Girish provided strategic guidance on the initial idea of bringing together a transnational network of civil society groups that would work together to advance the principles of transparent, inclusive and accountable governance of electricity. Girish’s guidance was crucial in helping us navigate the challenges that we encountered as the initiative grew from an initial pilot program in India, to a global effort to improve governance of the electricity sector.

More on Girish Sant’s contribution to policy advocacy and regulation can be found in Prayas’ tribute to Girish.
