The Thai government awarded licenses to construct four new power plants earlier this month. Glow Energy, Thai Oil, and the Japan’s Electric Power (J-Power). The four plants will produce around 4,400 MW of power. Glow will construct a 660-MW coal-fired plant, Thai Oil will build a 540-MW coal-fired plant, and J-Power will construct two 1,600-MW gas-fired plants. Thailand’s energy demand is estimated to increase by an average of 6.4% annually over the next 15 years. One of the new plants, located at Map Ta Phut, is envisaged as “one of the cleanest coal-fired plants in the world,” meeting domestic, World Bank, and even European standards.
