Based on the EGI assessments in Asia, this report makes the case for greater attention to institutions, processes and actors that determine how decisions are made.
Good Governance
The way decisions are made in the electricity sector strongly influences the success of policies. The problem, as well as the solution, lies in how the sector is governed. We work with civil society and sector actors to promote inclusive, transparent and accountable systems.
Public Interests
Electricity is closely linked to public interests. It powers economic development. But ensuring reliable access to electricity, particularly for the poorest, is a challenge. Electricity has many local environmental impacts and accounts for a significant share of global greenhouse gas emissions.
Enabling Dialogue
Since 2005, coalitions of NGOs in India, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines with expertise in various social, economic, and environmental issues have collaborated to use the EGI Toolkit to conduct assessments of governance in the electricity sector in their respective countries.
