Instituto Brasileiro de Defesa do Consumidor (Brazilian Institute for Consumer Defense) is a Brazilian non-profit consumer organization, founded in 1987. Idec’s main objectives are to contribute to: the balance of market relationships; to the enforcement and enhancement of consumer’s legislation; to improve access to and quality of services and products; to improve the standards of sustainable consumption; and to strengthen democracy, by stimulating citizen awareness and participation.

EGI is launched in Brazil
By Davida Wood on Monday, June 23, 2008 EGI has launched a new effort to improve governance of the electricity sector in Brazil. The initiative is being led by Brazil’s leading consumer advocacy group, the Institute for Consumer Defense (IDEC). Greater understanding of, and responsiveness to, the concerns and motivations of consumers with respect to environmental sustainability will be integral to EGI/Brazil’s efforts.

New funding from the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP)
By Emily Chessin on Thursday, November 8, 2007EGI recently received funding from the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership to expand the initiative to Brazil and South Africa. We were one 36 projects selected from the 310 concepts received. In the coming six months, we will conduct scoping efforts in Brazil and South Africa and will launch a new electricity governance assessment in both of these countries.
